Audio Setup for Remote Meetings with KVM-A3

  • Hi, I recently purchased the Geekworm KVM-A3 for use with PiKVM and I need some guidance on the audio setup for my specific use case:

    Setup:
    - Local laptop (source) → KVM-A3 + Raspberry Pi 4 → Remote laptop (target)
    - Cannot install any software on the remote laptop
    - Need to use this setup for video meetings

    Requirements:
    1. Need bi-directional audio:
       - Must be able to speak from my local laptop's microphone and have it work in meeting software on the remote laptop
       - Need to hear audio from the remote laptop
       - Will be using this primarily for video conferencing (Teams/Zoom/etc.)

    Questions:
    1. What's the recommended configuration for bi-directional audio in this setup?
    2. Does USB audio pass-through support microphone input from the local laptop?
    3. Are there any specific settings or configurations I need to adjust for optimal meeting audio quality?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

  • @melon playground the KVM-A3 supports USB audio pass-through, which means you can use the local laptop's microphone. Make sure to connect the microphone to the local laptop via USB or the headphone jack (depending on your setup).

  • Hey there!level devil

I’ve been using a similar PiKVM setup, and getting audio to work bi-directionally can be tricky. Here are a few things to consider:

    1. USB Audio Passthrough – The Geekworm KVM-A3 does support USB audio, but it usually only works for output (i.e., sending audio from the remote machine to your local one). For mic input from your local laptop, you’d need a separate USB audio adapter that the KVM can recognize and forward properly.

    2. Software Limitation – Since you can't install any software on the remote laptop, you’re relying purely on hardware passthrough. Some KVMs struggle with forwarding mic input correctly, so you might need to test different USB audio devices.

    3. Possible Workarounds – If direct USB mic passthrough doesn’t work, you might need an alternative approach, like using a second audio channel over a network (e.g., virtual audio devices via OBS/NDI if allowed) or even a hardware-based audio mixer that connects separately to both devices.

    4. Settings Tweaks – If your KVM does recognize a USB audio device for both input and output, make sure it’s set as the default device on the remote laptop. You might need to tweak the input sensitivity in Teams/Zoom settings for better clarity.
