External LED on x828

  The LEDs on the x828 board are on the "rear" of the units (assuming the USB ports are considered the front).  I would like to connect external LEDs to the boards.  When I removed one of the SMD LEDs, connected two wires, the external LED only shows a stautus of ON or OFF-instead of flashing activitity.  Are there 3 wires to these LEDs ?
