Overview
A PN532-based near-field communication board operating at 13.56 MHz, with a Raspberry Pi 40-pin GPIO connector. Jumpers and DIP switches select UART, SPI or I2C host communication.
Features
- Onboard NFC antenna, PN532 controller and power indicator.
- Selectable UART, SPI and I2C interfaces; connect only one at a time.
- Breakout control pins for integration with other development boards.
- Manufacturer examples for Raspberry Pi Python/C, STM32 and Arduino.
Specifications
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Model | PN532 NFC HAT |
| Brand | Waveshare |
| NFC controller | PN532 |
| Operating voltage | 3.3 V / 5 V |
| Operating frequency | 13.56 MHz |
| Host interface | UART (default), SPI, I2C |
| Default serial baud rate | 115200 bps |
| Raspberry Pi connection | 40-pin GPIO |
NFC Operating Modes
- Reader/writer modes for ISO/IEC 14443A / MIFARE, FeliCa and ISO/IEC 14443B.
- Card operation modes for ISO/IEC 14443A / MIFARE and FeliCa.
- Peer-to-peer communication based on ISO/IEC 18092 (NFCIP-1).
These are controller capabilities. Available operations depend on the host software, card type and access permissions. Card operation mode does not mean that an arbitrary card can be fully cloned or emulated.
Interface Selection
| Mode | I0 | I1 |
|---|---|---|
| UART | L | L |
| I2C | H | L |
| SPI | L | H |
Configure jumpers with power disconnected. Enable only the DIP switches for the selected interface. Check connector orientation and match the software interface to the hardware settings.
Board Layout and Control Signals
- 40-pin GPIO connector: connects the HAT to a Raspberry Pi.
- Breakout control pins: provide connections to compatible host boards such as STM32 or Arduino.
- Integrated antenna coil and PN532 controller: handle contactless communication.
- Power LED: indicates that the board is powered.
- DIP switches: route the selected interface to the Raspberry Pi; enable only one interface group at a time.
- I0 / I1 jumpers: select UART, I2C or SPI as shown in the interface table.
- INT0 jumper: response signal connection to Raspberry Pi D16 (BCM16).
- RSTPDN jumper: reset signal connection to Raspberry Pi D20 (BCM20).
Dimensions
Board outline: 85 × 56 mm, according to the manufacturer's dimension drawing. These dimensions describe the PCB outline, not the shipping package or the full assembly height.
Package Contents
- PN532 NFC HAT × 1.
- MIFARE Classic 1K keyfob × 1.
- Raspberry Pi is not included.
Compatibility and Limitations
Supported contactless card families include MIFARE/NTAG2xx; operations depend on the card, software and access permissions. This board cannot read SLE4442 contact cards or bypass the key requirements of encrypted cards.
SPI uses BCM4 for chip select. I2C clock stretching requires attention, and UART may conflict with the serial console. Follow the manufacturer guide. Available examples do not establish testing on every Raspberry Pi model or OS release.
Development Resources
The manufacturer's technical guide provides setup instructions, Raspberry Pi Python/C examples, STM32 and Arduino examples, schematics and controller documentation. Select the example matching your hardware interface and operating system.
