Overview
The PoE HAT (F) is an IEEE 802.3af/at compliant Power over Ethernet (PoE+) expansion board designed for the Raspberry Pi 5 and CM5. Paired with an 802.3af/at compliant PoE switch or router, it delivers both high-speed network connectivity and stable power through a single Ethernet cable—eliminating the need for a separate USB-C power adapter and drastically simplifying cabling for Pi clusters, IoT gateways, and industrial deployments.
Engineered for high performance and reliability, the board integrates a fully isolated Switched-Mode Power Supply (SMPS). It supplies up to 5V 4.5A to the Raspberry Pi via the 40-pin GPIO header, with an additional 12V 2A output on a dedicated 2-pin header and up to 25W combined output power for attached peripherals. An onboard high-speed active cooling fan paired with a metal heatsink keeps the Raspberry Pi 5 running at full speed under sustained load.
Note: The PoE HAT (F) supports the Raspberry Pi 5 and CM5 (via the 40-pin header on a CM5 IO Board) only. It is not compatible with the Raspberry Pi 4B, 3B+, or 3B.
Key Features
🌐 Single-Cable Power & Networking
- IEEE 802.3af/at Compliant: Works with standard PoE/PoE+ switches, routers, or injectors to carry both power and network data over a single RJ45 cable.
- Fully Isolated SMPS: The isolated switched-mode power supply keeps the PoE input electrically separated from the 5V rail, ensuring a clean and stable feed to the Raspberry Pi.
⚡ Dual Power Outputs
- 5V 4.5A on the 40-Pin Header: High-current output powers the Raspberry Pi mainboard and any HATs stacked on top.
- 12V 2A on a 2-Pin Header: A dedicated 12V rail for external fans, sensors, or display modules.
- 25W Max Combined Power: Generous peripheral power headroom across both the 12V and 5V outputs.
❄️ Active Cooling with Metal Heatsink
- Onboard Active Fan: High-speed cooling fan accelerates heat dissipation, keeping the Raspberry Pi 5 from throttling under continuous load.
- Metal Heatsink Included: Ships with a metal heatsink and three thermal tapes for direct contact cooling on the SoC and memory chips.
🔌 Stackable & Expansion Ready
- Pass-Through 40-Pin GPIO: Standard Raspberry Pi 40-pin stackable header allows additional HATs to be mounted on top effortlessly.
- Plug and Play: No drivers or software installation required—the board works as soon as the Raspberry Pi boots.
Power Requirements & Safety Guide
⚠️ IMPORTANT POWER SAFETY WARNINGS:
- PoE Source Required: Requires an IEEE 802.3af/at compliant PoE switch, router, or injector. A standard non-PoE network switch cannot power the board.
- Board Compatibility: Designed for the Raspberry Pi 5 and CM5 (via the CM5 IO Board). Do not connect it to a Raspberry Pi 4B, 3B+, or 3B.
- PoE Port Power Budget: The single-port output of a normal 802.3af switch is typically 15W. To reach the full 25W output, use an 802.3at (30W) PoE switch port.
| Parameter | Requirement |
|---|---|
| PoE Input Voltage | 37V ~ 57V DC |
| PoE Standard | IEEE 802.3af/at PoE / PoE+ |
| Recommended PoE Source | 802.3at (30W) PoE switch port for full output power |
When the Raspberry Pi 5 starts up, it detects the PD protocol on the USB-C port. With PoE power entering through the 40-pin header, that handshake never happens, so the board defaults to a 3A current limit and may display a low-power warning. Because the PoE HAT (F) can supply 5V 4.5A, it is recommended to raise the limit in the EEPROM:
1. Open the EEPROM configuration for editing:
2. Add the following line to remove the 3A limit and allow 5A, then save and reboot:
Installation & Assembly Guide
- Stick the three thermal tapes onto the Raspberry Pi 5's SoC and memory chips.
- Seat the metal heatsink over the thermal tapes.
- Stack the PoE HAT (F) onto the 40-pin GPIO header and secure it with the included screws.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from an IEEE 802.3af/at compliant PoE switch or router to the PoE RJ45 port on the HAT—the Raspberry Pi powers up with no USB-C adapter attached.
- (Optional) Raise the Raspberry Pi 5 current limit to 5A via the EEPROM—see the commands in the Power Requirements & Safety Guide above.
