Overview
The RP2040-Zero is a ultra-compact, low-cost, high-performance Pico-compatible microcontroller module built around the official Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip. Designed with a castellated edge module for seamless Surface-Mount (SMD) integration, it packs maximum computing power into a tiny footprint.
Equipped with a modern USB Type-C interface, onboard RGB LED, and full support for both C/C++ and MicroPython ecosystems, the RP2040-Zero is an ideal hardware choice for DIY electronics projects, rapid prototyping, custom USB peripherals, and space-constrained embedded mass production applications.
Key Features
🚀 High-Performance Microcontroller Architecture
- RP2040 Silicon Core: Dual-core Arm Cortex-M0+ processor running at up to 133 MHz with flexible clock options.
- On-Chip & External Storage: Includes 264KB of high-speed SRAM and 2MB of onboard NOR Flash memory.
- Programmable I/O (PIO): 8 x state machines for building custom hardware peripherals, interfaces, and protocol emulators.
- USB 1.1 Host & Device: Fully supports host and device operating modes with drag-and-drop UF2 programming via USB mass storage.
📏 Compact & Integration-Friendly Design
- Castellated Edge Module: Allows direct surface-mounting (SMD) onto custom carrier boards without pin headers.
- Modern Type-C Connector: USB Type-C port used for both power supply and high-speed firmware flashing.
- Onboard Controls & LED: Features independent BOOT and RESET buttons alongside a programmable WS2812 RGB LED for quick status indication.
🔌 Rich Multi-Function Peripherals
- 29 x Multiplexed GPIO Pins: 20 GPIOs brought out via standard pin headers, with the remaining accessible via soldering pads.
- Hardware Interfaces: Includes 2x SPI, 2x I2C, 2x UART, 4x 12-bit ADC channels, and 16x controllable PWM channels.
- Integrated Sensors: On-chip accurate temperature sensor, clock, and hardware timers.
🛠️ Flexible Software Ecosystem
- Multi-Language Support: Fully compatible with official C/C++ SDK and MicroPython.
- IDE Support: Works smoothly with Thonny IDE, Visual Studio Code, and Arduino IDE.
- Power Management: Features low-power sleep and dormant modes for battery-conscious applications.
Important Usage Notes
⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTICE:
- 3.3V Logic Level: All GPIO pins operate at 3.3V logic level. Do NOT apply 5V signals directly to GPIO pins to prevent permanent damage.
- Firmware Flashing: To enter bootloader mode, press and hold the BOOT button while connecting the USB-C cable to your computer.
- RGB LED Pinout: The onboard WS2812 RGB LED is routed to GPIO16 by default.
- Power Safety: The 3V3 pin is strictly for 3.3V regulated output/input. Use VSYS or VUSB for 5V power input. If connecting an external battery to VSYS, install a blocking diode to prevent reverse current.
