Compatibility Analysis: X1205-C1 Metal Enclosure for X1203 UPS Expansion Boards

At our core, we believe the best product improvements come from our community. For a long time, we didn't offer a dedicated enclosure for the X1203 UPS, primarily because its flexible battery connection options made a "one-size-fits-all" case difficult to design.

However, after receiving numerous inquiries, one resourceful customer took matters into their own hands. They purchased the X1205-C1 Metal Enclosure to see if it could be DIY-modified for the X1203.

Inspired by this, our team ran a series of compatibility tests. Here is what we discovered.

The Good News: Perfect Port Alignment

Our tests confirmed that the X1205-C1 chassis is a near-perfect physical match for the Raspberry Pi 5 and X1203 combination. The precision cutouts on the X1205-C1 align seamlessly with:

  • All Raspberry Pi 5 standard ports.

  • The X1203 USB-C power input.

  • The X1203 DC Jack power input.

  • The X1203 power button

The Challenge: Mounting Hole Alignment

While the ports line up beautifully, we did identify one limitation regarding the internal mounting. Currently, only two of the copper standoffs on the bottom of the X1203 align with the existing screw holes in the X1205-C1 base.

While two mounting points are often enough for a secure "DIY" fit, we want to provide a more professional, stable solution for our users.

If you are using our 2-cell battery holder with the X1203, you can conveniently place the battery pack in the internal space between the Raspberry Pi 5 motherboard and the bottom of the X1205-C1 case.

The Future: A New Revision is Coming!

We are excited to announce that based on these test results, we are revising the X1205-C1 design.

The upcoming version of the X1205-C1 will feature a modified baseplate with additional mounting holes specifically positioned to support the X1203 UPS. This will make the X1205-C1 the official, fully compatible metal housing for both the X1205 and X1203 series.

Key Takeaways:

  • Current X1205-C1: Compatible with DIY effort (2/4 mounting holes align; ports align perfectly).

  • Next Revision: Full "out-of-the-box" compatibility for X1203.

Thank you to our community for pushing us to make our products better. Stay tuned for the release of the updated enclosure!
